Christmas At Our House

It's Christmas!

Yesterday the kids put on their fancy clothes and we went to mamaw's house.

My guy loves to tease his mama. She has an exercise machine, and he always plays around on that and gets the kids excited. I dig his humor.

When we got home, it took until 10:00 to get both kids asleep.

Santa came and filled the stockings, and ate the cookies and milk that we left out. This was the scene when we went to bed.

They were excited to get downstairs!

She understands what gifts are this year, and so it was very sweet to watch her open her packages. She gasps a little when the gift has something to do with a baby doll.

Here is superman playing with superman.

I love my family. We don't buy much throughout the year, so it's really fun to be able to give them things and then spend the day watching them play. Later we are heading out to visit my dad, and then tomorrow, my mom.

On Living With A Not So Tiny Little Boy

When you live with a not so tiny little boy, one day you might find a plastic, musclebound guy swimming in your bathroom sink.

You might hand him a toy catologue and a pen, and ask him to circle the things he likes. When you look to see what he circled, you might be surprised, because he circled big boy things like transformers and nerf blasters and bionicles. Since when did he even know that stuff existed? Since when does he skip right over the Sesame Street stuff?

You will receive instruction on how to make different engine noises for tractors, combines, and trash trucks.

One day you might sit down on the floor next to him, where he is playing with his tractors, and try to shoot love straight into him with hugs and smooches and endearing words, and he will smile and hug you back and then say, "Okay mama, now I have to get back to this playing." because his imagination just consumes him these days.

He also will probably roll his eyes and grin when his parents kiss after dinner.

You will check his pockets before doing the laundry, as you usually do, and find a folded up red construction paper heart from a girl, who has written her name in the center for him. When you ask him about it, he will shrug off-handedly and say, "Yeah, she gave that to me."

I thank my lucky stars that I happen to live with a six year old not so tiny little boy.

The Tree Is Decorated

We put the tree up this week! When I'm not stressed to the max about travel and gift buying and wrapping and baking, I love all the cozy things that Christmas brings. One of my very favorite things to do is sit on the couch with my feet up on the footstool, sip a hot beverage, and have both the lit fireplace and the glowing Christmas tree in my sight. Frequently this is interrupted by a waking baby or a 6 year old who can't get to sleep, but the moments I steal in between fill me up.

My right hand is awkwardly covering up a hole in my jeans.

Today we visited Santa. My daughter didn't want to sit on his lap, so we took a family shot so that she could have a picture and feel more comfortable. She did take a candy cane from him though.

My son told me he didn't feel nervous at all this year. He also said, "I hope Santa retires someday, because I want to be Santa when I grow up."
